UNEMPLOYMENT DURING COVID-19

Hawai'i Unemployment AssistancE

Please visit labor.hawaii.gov/ui for more information on the state's unemployment insurance division. The following is a brief summary of the main unemployment assistance being offered: 

​Extension of Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC)
  • All claimants receiving state or federal unemployment benefits receive a supplement of $300 per week, starting December 26, 2020 and ending March 14, 2021. 

Regular Unemployment Insurance (UI) Benefits
  • Up to 26 weeks of UI benefits 
  • Apply on huiclaims.hawaii.gov
Extension of Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC) 
  • PEUC has been extended to 24 weeks of additional unemployment benefits.
  • PEUC is extended to March 14, 2021. If a person receives PEUC as of March 14, 2021, then that person may continue receiving benefits through April 5, 2021 as long as the maximum number of weeks have not been reached.  
  • Once a person runs out of regular unemployment benefits, they should file for PEUC. Login to your unemployment account and click on the PEUC button notification to apply. 
  • When a person exhausts PEUC, the Department of Labor will send a written notice of potential Extended Benefits (EB). Login to your unemployment account to apply. 
Extended Benefits (EB) 
  • Up to 13 additional weeks of UI benefits for those who have exhausted PEUC 
  • Does not "expire" on certain date and should extend into 2021, triggers off when unemployment rate falls
Mixed Earner Unemployment Compensation (MEUC - new program)
  • Qualifications:
    • Have at least $5,000 a year in self-employment income
    • Disqualified from receiving PUA, and
    • Eligible for regular state unemployment 
  • Received $100 per week in additional benefits

Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) 
  • If you are not eligible for Regular Unemployment Insurance (UI) Benefits, you may be eligible for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA.) Generally, a person may be eligible for PUA if they are unemployed, partially unemployed, unable to work, or unavailable to work due to a Covid-19 related reason. 
  • PUA is extended to 50 weeks of benefits
  • PUA is extended until March 14, 2021. If a person receives PUA as of March 14, 2021, then that person may continue receiving benefits through April 5, 2021 as long as the maximum number of weeks have not been reached. 
  • If a person files for PUA after December 27, 2020, then that person can backdate their application to December 1, 2020. 
  • Apply on pua.hawaii.gov
