Self-Help Center Legal Navigator
If so, Legal Aid’s AmeriCorps Self-Help Center Legal Navigator positions may be the right opportunity for you.
The Mission: AmeriCorps Self-Help Center Navigators assist unrepresented individuals navigating the civil justice system at courthouse based self-help centers. Members work alongside private attorneys volunteering their time at the self-help centers and assist in recruitment and scheduling. Members also prepare self-help materials and assist with client services in Legal Aid offices. Services are currently being provided remotely but will likely transition to in-office and in -court during the term of service.
We are looking for individuals who have good people skills, an interest in helping others, good computer skills, an interest in the law, and who excel working as part of a team. Experience working with disadvantaged individuals and/or legal experience is helpful but not required. Training is provided. This position is uniquely suited for students or recent graduates considering a career in law. While the benefits are modest, the experience is tremendous.
The Commitment: At least 450 hours of service over one-year starting September 1, 2020 (about 10-12 per week). Must be available at least 30 minutes before, during, and 30 minutes after self-help center hours. (Kauai: Monday and Thursday 9:30 – 12:30). All remaining service hours must be completed during business hours to ensure 10-12 hours of service per week. While some services are currently being delivered remotely, presence in Hawaii during the term of service is required. Must pass criminal history background checks & sex-offender check prior to start of service and be otherwise eligible to serve under the rules of the AmeriCorps program (www.nationalservice.gov).
The Benefits: Annual living allowance of $6195.00 (for 12 full months of service). At the complete of a successful term of service members earn a $1638.89 education award which can be used to pay qualifying education expenses. Members over 60 years of age can transfer education award to certain family members. See www.nationlaservice.gov for more information about AmeriCorps benefits.
