MEDICAL LEGAL FELLOW

The Medical Legal Fellow will be based on Oahu. The fellow will work with our Community Outreach team to build our Medical Legal Partnership practice by building relationships with Health Care providers Federally Qualified Health Centers. The fellow will develop and implement high quality legal trainings, conduct intake, provide legal assistance & conduct legal education for consumers/clients.

​About the Position

Medical-legal partnerships embed lawyers as specialists in health care settings. Medical Legal Partnerships provide legal staff to consult with clinical and non-clinical staff about system and policy barriers to care, and to aid patients in resolving legal issues that impact the social determinants of health. These partnerships leverage legal expertise to advance practices that lead to safer and healthier environments. Legal subject matter may include public assistance benefits (social security, general assistance and SNAP/food stamps), domestic violence, education, health care, housing law, family law & consumer protection.

An ideal candidate would demonstrate commitment to the needs of underprivileged communities and have some familiarity with medical legal partnerships, domestic violence and substance abuse. This fellowship is currently funded through December 2023 but continuation of the project is probable and there may be other opportunities to continue to work with Legal Aid after the end of the fellowship.

Requirements include:
  • Member in good standing of the Bar of the State of Hawaii or licensed to practice in another state and eligible to practice in Hawaii under Hawaii Rules of Professional Conduct rule 1.16.
  • Demonstrable commitment to social justice or experience working with disadvantaged and/or low-income population, or issues affecting low-income populations and survivors of domestic abuse is required.
  • Litigation experience and experience in one or more of the legal areas listed above preferred.
  • Able to work collaboratively and maintain good working relationships in small office.
  • Culturally sensitive and able to work well with diverse, low-income populations.
  • Able to manage a busy litigation practice, meet deadlines, and perform multiple tasks with attention to detail.
  • Able to work under pressure in an empathetic and professional manner.
  • Able to travel inter-island, have driver’s license, and access to a car.
  • Humility in working with colleagues and clients across the spectrum of diversity, including race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, immigrant status, religious identity, physical and mental disabilities, and/or limited English proficiency.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage a busy practice, meet deadlines, and perform multiple tasks with attention to detail.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proof-reading skills, with ability to be detail-oriented.
  • Able to work under pressure in an empathetic and professional manner.
  • Basic computer skills required. Familiarity with Microsoft Office program (Word, Excel, SharePoint, Teams), strongly preferred.

​Compensation and Benefits: $54,060 - $64,830 annual salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. Benefits package includes $150/month law school student loan repayment, medical and dental insurance, 401K match, life insurance, long term care insurance, and long-term disability insurance. We offer an extremely generous paid time off package which includes 21 days of vacation, 12 days of sick leave and 14 holidays a year. This position is currently hybrid; remote and in-office work based on a rotation schedule. Hybrid working condition is subject to change but likely to continue.
