Staff Attorney – Elder Law/Kupuna Legal Aid Services, Honolulu Office

The Staff Attorney will work with our Kupuna Legal Aid Services team with the primary responsibly of providing legal services to seniors and conducting outreach and education on legal issues affecting seniors. Legal services include, but are not limited to, assistance with advance health care directives, powers of attorney, wills, public assistance benefits, housing, guardianships, family law and consumer debt. Services may also include intake, counsel and advice, document drafting, and full representation in court or administrative hearings. The attorney will participate in statewide initiatives, interactions with State, Federal and local agencies, day-to-day oversight of non-attorney staff and coordination with elder paralegals working in Legal Aid offices across Hawaii.

Requirements:
  • Member in good standing of the Bar of the State of Hawaii is preferred. Applications from highly qualified individuals awaiting results from the February bar exam as well as attorneys licensed to practice in another state and eligible to practice in Hawaii under Hawaii Rules of Professional Conduct rule 1.16 and who are willing to take the bar exam at the next available sitting will be considered.
  • Demonstrable commitment to social justice and experience working with seniors, disabled, low-income and/or other marginalized populations strongly preferred.
  • Estate planning or elder law experience preferred. Consumer protection, guardianship or family law experience is a plus, but not required. Willingness to learn other areas of law.
  • Desire to develop litigation skills or litigation experience strongly preferred.
  • Able to work collaboratively and maintain good working relationships with diverse team of co-workers.
  • Humility in working with colleagues and clients across the spectrum of diversity, including race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, immigrant status, religious identity, physical and mental disabilities, and/or limited English proficiency.
  • Experience preparing, modifying and presenting engaging and culturally appropriate presentation to a variety of audiences.
  • Organizational skills to manage a busy practice, meet deadlines, and perform multiple tasks with attention to detail.
  • Strong personal work ethic and ability to organize time, manage diverse activities, and meet critical deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proof-reading skills, with ability to be detail-oriented
  • Able to work under pressure in an empathetic and professional manner.
  • Basic computer skills required. Familiarity with Microsoft Office program (Word, Excel, SharePoint, Teams), strongly preferred.
  • Must have valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle for home visits and outreach to various parts of ‘Oahu.

Compensation: $54,060 - $64,830 commensurate with experience and qualifications. Benefits package including $150/month student loan repayment, medical and dental insurance, 401K match, life insurance, long term care insurance, long term disability insurance. Staff Attorney – Kailua-Kona, Hawai‘i Island

Staff Attorney based out of our Kailua-Kona (Hawai‘i Island) office. Responsibilities include client representation in Family Law, (including divorce, divorce modification, paternity, restraining orders, child abuse and neglect and some guardianship and adoptions), Public Assistance Benefits, Housing and Consumer Protection, & Seniors Legal services. Staff Attorneys also participate in community engagement, outreach and education, statewide initiatives, and in and day–to-day oversight of non-attorney staff.

Qualifications:
  • Member in good standing of the Bar of the State of Hawai‘i or taking the February 2022 bar exam, or licensed to practice in another state and eligible to practice in Hawaii under Hawaii Rules of Professional Conduct rule 1.16 and willing to take the bar exam at the next available sitting.
  • Litigation experience preferred, but not required.
  • Demonstrable commitment to social justice or experience working with disadvantaged and/or low-income population and survivors of domestic abuse strongly preferred.
  • Able to work collaboratively and maintain good working relationships with co-workers.
  • Culturally sensitive and able to work well with diverse, low-income populations.
