Staff Attorney – Kupuna Legal Services, Honolulu Office
Position: The Staff Attorney will work with our Kupuna Legal Services team with the primary responsibility of providing legal services to seniors and conducting outreach and education on legal issues affecting seniors. Legal services include, but are not limited to assistance with advance health care directives, powers of attorney, wills, transfer on death deeds, public assistance benefits, housing, guardianships, family law and consumer debt. Services may include intake, counsel and advice, document drafting, and full representation in court or administrative hearings. The attorney will participate in statewide initiatives, interactions with State, Federal and local agencies, day-to-day oversight of non-attorney staff and coordination with kupuna legal services paralegals working in Legal Aid offices across Hawaii.

Requirements:
- Member in good standing of the Bar of the State of Hawaii are preferred. Applications from highly qualified individuals licensed to practice in another state and eligible to practice in Hawaii under Hawaii Rules of Professional Conduct rule 1.16 will be considered.
- Demonstrable commitment to social justice and experience working with a seniors, disabled, low-income and/or other marginalized populations strongly preferred.
- Estate Planning, family law or elder law experience preferred.
- Experience working in any capacity in the family court system or child welfare system a plus.
- Desire to develop litigation skills or litigation experience required.
- Experience preparing, modifying and presenting engaging and culturally appropriate presentation to a variety of audiences
- Excellent writing, editing, and proof-reading skills, with ability to be detail-oriented
- Able to work collaboratively and maintain good working relationships with diverse team of co-workers.
- Organizational skills to manage a busy practice, meet deadlines, and perform multiple tasks with attention to detail.
- Strong personal work ethic and ability to organize time, manage diverse activities, and meet critical deadlines with minimal supervision.
- Able to work under pressure in an empathetic and professional manner.
- Must demonstrate humility in working with colleagues and clients across the spectrum of diversity, including race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, immigrant status, religious identity, physical and mental disabilities, and/or limited English proficiency.
- Basic computer skills required. Familiarity with Microsoft Office program (Word, Excel, SharePoint, Teams), strongly preferred.
- Must have valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle for home visits, outreach, trainings, to various parts of ‘Oahu, and to Family Court, Circuit Court, and other locations.
