Staff Attorney – Kaneohe and/or Waianae

The Legal Aid Society of Hawaiʻi is Hawaiʻi’s oldest and largest non-profit public interest law firm with offices statewide. Through its dedicated staff, Legal Aid helps ensure justice and fairness for all by providing civil legal aid to the most vulnerable in our society.
 
Position Description
 
The Legal Aid Society of Hawaii is seeking a Staff Attorney for our Oahu “Country Justice” team operating out of our Kaneohe and/or Waianae offices.  Responsibilities of this position include client representation in Family Law, (including divorce, divorce modification, paternity, restraining orders, child abuse and neglect and some guardianship and adoptions), Public Assistance Benefits, Housing and Consumer Protection. Staff Attorneys also participate in community engagement, outreach and education, statewide initiatives, development of self-help resources and in and day–to-day oversight of non-attorney staff.

Candidates should meet the following minimum job qualifications:
  • Member in good standing of the Bar of the State of Hawaii are preferred. Applications from highly qualified individuals sitting for the February 2026 bar exam as well as attorneys licensed to practice in another state and eligible to practice in Hawaii under rule 1.16 of the Rules of the Supreme Court of the State of Hawaii will be considered.
  • Demonstrable commitment to social justice and experience working with disadvantaged and/or low-income population strongly preferred.
  • Desire to develop litigation skills or litigation experience strongly preferred.
  • Able to work collaboratively and maintain good working relationships with diverse team of co-workers.
  • Humility in working with colleagues and clients across the spectrum of diversity, including race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, immigrant status, religious identity, physical and mental disabilities, and/or limited English proficiency.
  • Organizational skills to manage a busy practice, meet deadlines, and perform multiple tasks with attention to detail.
  • Strong personal work ethic and ability to organize time, manage diverse activities, and meet critical deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proof-reading skills, with ability to be detail-oriented.
  • Able to work under pressure in an empathetic and professional manner.
  • Basic computer skills required. Familiarity with Microsoft Office program (Word, Excel, SharePoint, Teams), strongly preferred.
  • Must have valid drivers license and access to a vehicle to conduct home visits.
 
Compensation: $60,811-$72.926 commensurate with experience and qualifications.

  • Paid time off includes twenty-one (21) days of vacation, twelve (12) sick days, one (1) personal day, and fourteen (14) paid holidays annually (fifteen (15) during Election Year).

Hybrid work schedule may be available; remote and in-office work based on a weekly rotation schedule, subject to program and office needs.  Hybrid working conditions are subject to change.
