Staff Attorney: Maui

The Legal Aid Society of Hawaii, a non-profit law firm, endeavors to provide civil legal services throughout the State of Hawaii to those most in need. Our mission is to address critical legal needs through high quality legal advocacy, outreach and education in the pursuit of fairness and justice. Our team of dedicated advocates work every day with a purposeful desire to help and serve our community.

Responsibilities of this Staff Attorney position include client representation in Family Law, (including divorce, divorce modification, paternity, restraining orders, child abuse and neglect and some guardianship and adoptions), Public Assistance Benefits, Housing and Consumer Protection, Seniors Legal Services & Disaster-Related Legal Services. Staff Attorneys also participate in community engagement, outreach and education, statewide initiatives, and in and day–to-day oversight of non-attorney staff.

Requirements:

  • Member in good standing of the Bar of the State of Hawaii are preferred. Applications from highly qualified individuals sitting for the July 2025 bar exam as well as attorneys licensed to practice in another state and eligible to practice in Hawaii under Hawaii Rules of Professional Conduct rule 1.16 will be considered.
  • Demonstrable commitment to social justice and experience working with disadvantaged and/or low-income population strongly preferred.
  • Desire to develop litigation skills or litigation experience strongly preferred.
  • Able to work collaboratively and maintain good working relationships with diverse team of co-workers.
  • Humility in working with colleagues and clients across the spectrum of diversity, including race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, immigrant status, religious identity, physical and mental disabilities, and/or limited English proficiency.
  • Organizational skills to manage a busy practice, meet deadlines, and perform multiple tasks with attention to detail.
  • Strong personal work ethic and ability to organize time, manage diverse activities, and meet critical deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proof-reading skills, with ability to be detail-oriented.
  • Able to work under pressure in an empathetic and professional manner.
  • Basic computer skills required. Familiarity with Microsoft Office program (Word, Excel, SharePoint, Teams), strongly preferred.
  • Must have availability to travel to Moloka’i and Lana’i as needed.
Compensation: $58,472 - $70,121 commensurate with experience and qualifications. Our generous benefits package is designed to speak to employees’ needs and to support and enhance your lifestyle with an emphasis on quality of life and work-life balance.

Hybrid work schedule may be available; remote and in-office work based on a weekly rotation schedule, subject to program and office needs. Hybrid working conditions are subject to change.
