Director of Finance

The Legal Aid Society of Hawaiʻi is Hawaiʻi’s oldest and largest non-profit public interest law firm with 11 offices and over 100 staff members statewide.  Through its dedicated staff, Legal Aid helps ensure justice and fairness for all by providing civil legal aid to the most vulnerable in our society. 
Position Description:   

The Director of Finance reports directly to the Executive Director and works closely with the Executive and Deputy Director in ensuring and overseeing the financial health of the organization.  The Director of Finance is responsible for the development and implementation of financial strategies, financial planning and analysis, ensuring compliance with all financial regulations including state nonprofit and federal nonprofit guidelines. The Director supervises the accounting team and is responsible for development and implementation of accounting processes and procedures; oversees accounting and financial operations including payroll operations, accounts receivable & accounts payable. The Director prepares the annual budget and periodic monthly financial reports and works with the Executive Director on presentation of financial reports to the Board of Directors. The Director is the primary contact for the annual external audit.  The Director of Finance is also a key member of the firm’s statewide management team working closely with Directors and Managers on the administration of grants including budgeting, expenses allocations, financial reporting, grant specific audits and statewide initiatives. 

The Director of Finance is responsible for being a trusted and reliable expert on: 
  • Administrative and accounting procedures including timekeeping and grant compliance 
  • LASH Accounting Manual 
  • LASH personnel policies 
  • Legal Services Corporation Statute and Regulations 
  • Other policies and procedures, including industry best practices 

Requirements:  
  • Seasoned fiscal leader with deep and broad finance experience in accounting and auditing, supervising and managing teams, and experience leading the development and implementation of financial systems, policies, and procedures. 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or related field; MBA or CPA strongly preferred; and minimum of five years relevant work experience with comparable responsibilities and required skills. 
  • At least 2 years of accounting function supervisory experience is required.   
  • 2 + years of experience in legal services or similar nonprofit performing finance, administration and/or grant management role strongly preferred. 
  • Experience in grant administration, government contract administration or non-profit experience is preferred. 
  • Excellent administrative skills and experience.  
  • Broad knowledge of financial management systems, non-profit accounting, budgeting and financial planning and government grant compliance.  
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office program (Word, Excel, SharePoint, Teams), strongly preferred.  Experience with accounting software MIP preferred but not required.  
  • Understands and is responsive to the needs of the organization and stakeholders. 

  • Humility in working with colleagues and clients across the spectrum of diversity, including race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, immigrant status, religious identity, physical and mental disabilities, and/or limited English proficiency, a must. 

Compensation: 
Compensation: $80,502 - $96,397 commensurate with experience and qualifications. Our generous benefits package is designed to speak to employees’ needs and to support and enhance your lifestyle with an emphasis on quality of life and work-life balance.

Position is currently hybrid.  Hybrid working condition is subject to change.
