HISTORY
After several years of coverage by circuit-riding Legal Aid attorneys
from Maui, the Moloka`i community finally welcomed the opening of its
own Legal Aid office in the mid-1970's. Over the past 20 years, the Moloka`i
Legal Aid Society office has employed the only full-time practicing attorney
on the island. As the island’s sole source of full-time legal service,
the Moloka`i office is a vital part of the community.
In addition to routine casework on behalf of the island’s poverty community (almost half of all Moloka`i residents are eligible for Legal Aid services), the Moloka`i office has served as an information resource and consultant for non-profit community organizations and for allied social service agencies, and as an advocate on behalf of causes with community-wide impact. Just one example of this type of work is the Moloka`i office’s spearheading a community-based initiative in the 1990’s to open the island’s first domestic violence shelter.
